The Rev. Joseph Lowery is scheduled to be released Thursday from Emory Crawford Long Hospital following back surgery earlier this month. The longtime civil-rights activist, 86, underwent surgery Sept. 15. A neurosurgeon performed an operation to treat lumbar stenosis, a narrowing of the spine in the abdominal area. An ailment common to older people, the condition leads to pinched nerves, leg pains and difficulty walking.
