Federal housing officials have approved plans by the Atlanta Housing Authority to demolish four apartment complexes that the authority wants to rebuild as mixed-income communities.
The four complexes scheduled for demolition — Bankhead Courts, Herndon Homes, Hollywood Courts and Thomasville Heights — have more than 1,200 apartments. The authority will help tenants find new homes and give them vouchers to help offset rent and utilities.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved the demolition plan Wednesday.
The demolitions would take place in the next 12 to 18 months, authority officials said.
